Rain Forces Change of Course
Quarry Road - Sunday 12th July 2009

Saturday’s constant rain forced a change of race plan when riders fronted for Sunday’s Quarry Road Handicap.

Due to flooding along the Illawarra Mount Dryden Road, the race had to be changed to an out and back course.

Starting at the usual place just off the Western Highway, riders headed along the Sandbar Road, then turned right along the Illawarra Road and did a U turn just before the Stawell Halls Gap Road, then returned to the start.

Because the distance was an unknown, scratch races were held instead of a handicap.

Tania Walter, Meg Parnaby, Glenn Ford and Tony Lloyd headed off first, as a combined B and C grade. Ford and Lloyd separated from Parnaby and Walter on the return journey, with Lloyd getting the better of Ford in the final sprint.

Walter and Parnaby had a pleasant chat most of the way home, until Walter took off over the closing stages to take line honours.

Sean Prins, Alan Barnett, Daryl Elliott, Gerard O’Brien and Drew Heard rode off together as the A grade bunch. Most riders stayed together until the return trip over the Quarry Road hills, when Gerard O’Brien and Drew Heard broke away, with O’Brien crossing the line just ahead of Heard.
