Prins Powers to Victory
Quarry Road, Sunday 22nd March 2009

Grampian cyclists tackled the tough Quarry Rd/Lake Lonsdale circuit near Stawell on Sunday in cool, blustery conditions.

Australian Masters champion Leon Gibson appeared to have been well handicapped as he joined Peter Blair, Sean Prins and Tony Lloyd on the 4 minute 15sec mark, and his strength proved decisive as this bunch overtook limit markers Peter Mayo, Les Power, Shauna Heard and Glenn Ford with 15km to ride.

Further back on the course, 2 minute 30sec markers Alan Barnett, Gerard O’Brien, Daryl Elliott and Drew Heard were safely holding off the scratch bunch of Frank Kean, Chris Scott, Steve Monks and Dean Hayward, but were making very little progress in closing the gap to the leaders.

Coming over the Quarry Rd hill with 5km to ride, Glenn Ford was able to break free of his companions and make a bid for a solo victory. However, his escape was short lived as his chasers got back on terms.

The next to attack was Sean Prins and he successfully held his advantage to take the victory ahead of the fast finishing Gibson and Ford.

Frank Kean took fastest time honors in 1 hour 11 minutes 38 seconds.
