Armstrong Graded Scratch Races
Armstrong - Sunday 28th June 2009

Daryl Elliott won the A grade section

Grampians veteran cyclists tackled the short but testing Armstrong course last Sunday, with 16 riders completing 7 laps of the 7km circuit.

Divided into 3 groups for the graded scratch races, the riders were challenged by two sprints per lap for the 3 middle laps of the course, one as a hill climb and the other as a flat road sprint.

The first 3 placegetters in each sprint earned valuable points with the highest points scorer the winner.

The A grade riders were fairly evenly matched, with sprint wins and placings being shared amongst many of the 7 riders in the field. Daryl Elliott figured prominently in several hill climbs, and also won the final sprint to the line to take out the event by one point from Chris Scott, who broke clear for one lap picking up some wins in the process, before being reeled in again. Tim Schneider and Drew Heard drew for third place.

In the B grade event, Gerard O’Brien saw no future in trying to beat Peter Parnaby up the hill climb, and used his superior strength along the flats to break clear half way through the third lap. The following bunch were initially unconcerned, but then the gap got bigger with O’Brien taking out the major placing in each sprint along the way.

Despite a late chase from the following riders, O’Brien went on to win by a good margin with the fastest time of the day. Peter Parnaby was second with Tony Lloyd third.

The C grade riders were also evenly matched, with many very close hill climbs and sprints. Les Power just got the better of Tony Rathgeber, with Meg Parnaby taking out third place.
