Good Turnout for Scratch Races
Fyans Creek, Monday 9th March 2009

A good field of 25 Grampians Vets riders fronted to compete in the Fyans Creek Scratch Races, held on Labour Day near Halls Gap.

In the A Grade event, Alan Barnett, Steve Monks, Dean Hayward, Drew Gray, Chris Scott, Wayne Klauss, and Harvey Lang were kept on their toes in the hills by Frank Kean who was up to his usual tricks, trying to break up the field.

Klauss rode a consistantly strong race and convincingly won the sprint ahead of Monks in second place.

In B Grade Peter Blair, Stuart King, Daryl Elliott, Sean Prins, Glen Ford, Peter Parnaby and Ron Kelly were all well matched. Blair and Prins tried at various times to break clear but were always brought back. It came down to the final sprint, with Kelly getting a good break, but Elliott was pegging him back, but ran out of time, and had to settle for second place.

In C Grade Wayne Cox, Peter Mayo, Tom Eldridge, John McIntyre, and Les Power rode together. Although Eldridge and Mayo rode strongly throughout the race they were no match for Cox and Power in the sprint finish.

Cox made use of the distraction caused by B Grade passing them in the straight to the finish line to make his break. An alert and energetic Power took off behind Cox and was able to overtake Cox snatching first place. Cox finished an admirable second.

In D Grade Trevor McDonald, Frank Stokes, Meg Parnaby, Bridget Lang and Tania Walter rode the 47klm circuit in an average speed of 33kph. Stokes, who looked comfortable throughout the race, took out the sprint a bike length from Walter who placed second.
