South Pacific Championships
Maryborough, Victoria, Easter 2011

Grampians Vets cyclists Crystal Wemyss and Stephanie Frawley both won gold at the South Pacific Veteran Cycling Championships, held over the Easter break at Maryborough, Victoria.

Wemyss led the medal charge, taking out the 30 to 34 years womens age group road race on Friday, the sprint on Saturday morning, and her time trial on Saturday afternoon. Mildura based Frawley placed second in her 50 to 54 years women’s road race, and won her time trial by a country mile, posting the fastest female time of the day, averaging 41.1kph for the out and back 15 kilometre course.

Frawley is a time trial specialist, and still competes in the Australian open time trials each year, held at Buninyong, finishing in the middle of the field amongst the best young time trial riders Australia has to offer.

Wemyss clocked the third fastest women’s time of the day, averaging 38.5kph.

Other local riders to do well in the age group road races were Meg Parnaby, who placed fifth, and Glenn Ford, who rode extremely well to finish sixth in a large and very competitive field.

Geoff Richards was the surprise of the day in Saturdays age group time trials, averaging 39kph. Richards competed on his road bike with time trial bars added, so with a dedicated time trial bike this average may have translated to over 40kph, an impressive effort. Richards placed 8th overall.

Danny Monaghan also rode well in the time trials, placing tenth in his age group, and averaging 38.1kph, while Errol Schmidt, still recovering from a serious accident last year, also had a good hit out to record an average of 37kph, and finish fifth in his age group.

Meg Parnaby put in her usual solid performance on a standard road bike to place 4th in her age group with an average of 33.7kph.
